Christopher Columbus's Returns From his VoyageToday Christopher Columbus has just returned from a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. His voyage was funded by the King and Queen of Spain. He left for this voyage on August 3, 1492. Three ships left on the voyage; they were the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. The first land Columbus saw was an Island and Columbus named it San Salvador. Others believe that another shipmate found it and Columbus took credit. The next piece of land that they found was Cuba, they originally thought that they had found China and Columbus sent two men out to investigate. Instead they came back saying it was not China, and were smoking tobacco which many people are now doing thanks to Columbus. The third piece of land that they found was Hispaniola, however the natives called it Haiti. The Santa Maria sunk so Columbus sent 39 of his men to stay there and they created a small settlement named La Navidad. Soon after that Columbus and his crew sailed back to Spain.
